Beddit helps you manage your sleep. For each night, it shows you the lengths of the different sleep phases. To feel rested, it is important to get enough of the restorative deep sleep stage. For most people, 2-3 hours of deep sleep is enough. Beddit compares your night’s sleep with your usual amount of sleep, so you can easily see if a night was particularly good or bad.

REM sleep for memory

The REM sleep stage is where most dreams occur. It is called REM sleep because it is characterized by Rapid Eye Movements. REM sleep is important for memory, learning, and mood. Usually REM sleep is about 30% of sleep time, or 2-3 hours. As with deep sleep, Beddit shows how much REM sleep you have had.

What's your arousal index?

The arousal index means the number of times per hour we become restless. We hardly remember any of these arousals, but they still contribute to the poor quality and restlessness of our sleep. Beddit measures these arousals and shows you how many times you woke up or were close to waking up. Together with environmental measurement data (noise level, luminosity, and room temperature), you can see if external stimuli are causing your sleep restlessness.

Smart bed measures automatically

Your Beddit smart bed automatically measures and uploads your sleep data to our online servers. The measurement is based on ballistocardiography, a scientific method for measuring vital signs from micro-movements caused by your heart and respiratory functions.

Simply sleep normally. The Beddit sensor is integrated into a smart bed. You don't need to wear any wristbands, headbands, or similar inconveniences. Simply sleep normally. Beddit does the rest.

Be productive, manage stress

We all want to be productive at work. Some amount of stress is actually good for productivity - but continuous high levels of stress are a threat to health and wellbeing.

Beddit measures your sleep time recuperation - the periods of sleep when your body is recovering from stress. With Beddit, you can see and manage the effects of your lifestyle (e.g. drinking coffee or alcohol at evening) on your recuperation. You can keep a personal diary to track your daily choices and their effect on your sleep.

Beddit helps you to understand the factors that affect your sleep, and get them under control. From the trend display in your browser, you can see how different measured parameters are correlated - for example, bedroom temperature, total sleep time, deep sleep time, stress recovery, etc.

Sleep & cognitive capabilities

Good sleep is crucial for maintaining cognitive abilities: making good decisions, and being alert and responsive. Dr. Avi Sadeh of Tel Aviv University conducted a study on the effects of sleep deprivation in grade school children. In short, what he found was that a perfectly capable 6th grader performed like a “mere 4th grader” when that 6th grader was “slightly sleepy.” In other words, one hour of lost sleep negated the positive effects of a whole 2 years of education.

Studies also show that adequate sleep improves safety consciousness, for example at work or in traffic.

Manage your weight

If you want to lose weight, you need to get enough sleep.

Researchers have reported that women who slept only 5 hours a night were 32% more likely to experience major weight gain (over 15 kg) and 15% more likely to become obese, compared to those who slept 7 hours a night. The 16 year study tracked the sleep of nearly 70 000 women.

The researchers did not discover any differences in exercise levels or physical activity that would explain why the women who slept less weighed more. Prior studies have shown that just a minor sleep deprivation affects the hormones that control appetite. But, in fact, the women who slept less also ate less. This suggests that something other than appetite and diet account for the weight gain in women who sleep less.

The reasons? Studies show that sleep deprivation can change your metabolic rate (the number of calories you burn when you rest). Insufficient sleep can cause the release of additional cortisol, the stress hormone,and one of the hormones that regulates appetite. There's also a theory that we move around less when we don't get enough sleep, which means we burn fewer calories.

If you want to lose weight, you should make sure that you are getting enough quality sleep in addition to following a healthy diet and exercise program - not just because of how it affects you physically, but mentally as well.
